Windows 7 Media Center

Have you heard of TIVO? Well if you have not it's a DVR (digital video recorder) for your TV. Here in Canada we have been limited to the use of TIVO and stuck with the DVR's from our TV providers. Well if you could see and use the setup I have I promise you, you would never look back and ask your self what was I waiting for.

Imagine having the ability with a few tips from this link to record and remove the commercials from your favorite TV shows!! Or having your entire music library playing through your home stereo while watching all the pictures in your Pictures folder. If this sounds to good to be true or something from the future, It's not. This is something that has been around for a few years and is getting more and more popular. The one thing I will warn you about is, be careful it's addicting and prepare to do alot of reading. I'll post some pics of my home setup Later.

Windows 7 Libraries

With Windows 7, organising files just got better. With the introduction of new Library system, you can now access the same file from multiple location based on your need. For example you have certain college project. You need some text from certain ebook, a case study in document, a picture for your college project presentation backgroud and a music to go with presentation. So you either duplicate these files into another folder for your project, or everytime you want to access it you have to search among wallpapers, music, ebooks, documents... The library is a virtual folder type system which gives you the ability to access the files in a defined manner without ever copying them at multiple places. You make a project library and define to include specific files and specific folders in it. It doesnot copy the files but keeps reference of the file location to show the specific files everytime you open the library .

Clean out Start-up Items

How often do you install updates to acrobat reader or Java?

These two programs and alot of other programs like to add an entry to start with windows. While it wont hurt anything this is probably the quickest way to slow down windows while booting. For the most part there is no reason for programs to start with windows unless they are securoty related. The good news is there is an easy way to control what starts with windows open up MSCONFIG (click the link for a great pictured tutorial).Click on the startup tab and you will be presented with a list of programs that are set to start with windows. If you come accross an item and you don't know what it's for write down the name and search google. You'll be amazed how much info you will find about each item from a simple google search.

Defrag Hard Drive

Windows 7 to the Rescue.

If you have not noticed yet, windows 7 has a much better engine to defrag your hard drives. Windows 7 also sets the drives to be defragged on a schedule. My recommendation is to leave the defrag properties to the default and forget about the drives as I have noticed no lose of speed or lack of performance from the default settings. This is something i have been monitoring for over a year now and see no need to use any third party software. Good job Microsoft!!!
